A Happy Ending...
Luke and Martha had a very rough start in life and finally, after much love and patience, their story has a happy ending!
When they arrived as 6 month old puppies, is was obvious there was something very wrong. Mistreatment? abuse? neglect? Maybe all three? They were very fearful and scared of humans. They would huddle together and as far away from people as possible.
There were 5 siblings total, 4 boys and 1 girl. To make things easy we named them Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Martha. Fortunately for Matthew and John, they were adopted within a month of arriving and though it took the family a long time, they finally got them settle in.
Mark was chosen by a hound rescue in Northern California and after almost 1 full year of rehabilitation and hard work, he too finally got adopted.
This left Luke and Martha for us to work with. Though it was hard, we knew they had to be separated if any progress was going to be made. So we went to work teaching them basic training and some socialization. Though we could teach them to be comfortable at the ranch, what they really needed was a home environment and public exposure.
Luke was placed in a foster-to-adopt home and starting improving. We were hopeful that after time, he would adjust and the adoption would be finalized.
In the meantime along came Anne Marie and Nate. They had seen Martha on line, made a trip all the way down to the Selma ranch from Sacramento to meet her. Though they could tell after meeting her that it was going to be a long haul, they decided to take a chance on her and took her home. They gave her a fresh start, a new name, lots of love and lots training.

Well, we thought we had done it, we thought everyone had been adopted, but unfortunately, Lukes family couldn't make it work and they brought him back. We were so disappointed and sad for Luke. But, there was something better in store for him.
We re-posted his info on Petfinder and put the word out that he was back. 5 months after Daisy was adopted, her new parents were very concerned hearing that Luke still hadn't been adopted.
Though they knew it would be tough, they decided that since Daisy had come along so well, they would foster Luke and if all went well, they would adopt him. Here's how it's going so far....
The day we met up with Anne Marie, Daisy & Nate to had off Luke. He did better than we had anticipated and Daisy was very excited to see her brother after 5 months!
Right after his first bath, Luke followed Daisy up to a safe, comfortable spot.
Luke has started his official training and is doing very well. We look forward to continued updates and some new pictures to post. After talking to Anne Marie and Nate, they said it's going great, the two are enjoying being together and it looks like it was meant to be!
